Target Group

Rationale

In India, the secondary school dropout rate is currently 10.9%. To combat this issue, the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) scheme was introduced as a central government initiative aimed at reducing dropout rates among school children, specifically targeting those from economically weaker families at the 8th-grade level.

Implemented in 2008 by the Department of School Education & Literacy under the Ministry of Education, the NMMS provides 100,000 scholarships annually to meritorious students whose parental income does not exceed ₹3,50,000 per annum. Each scholarship grants ₹12,000 per year, distributed at a rate of ₹1,000 per month, which can significantly aid in covering educational expenses such as books, materials, and transport.

The scholarships are available to deserving students enrolled in government schools, with some specific exclusions: children studying in Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, and residential schools operated by the Central or State Governments are not eligible for this scheme.

Recognising the importance of addressing the secondary school dropout rate and the potential of the NMMS scheme, Kelir partners with government schools to offer targeted training programs. Our program aims to equip students with the necessary skills and confidence to effectively prepare for and excel in the NMMS scholarship test.
